Andrew O’Callaghan got the new Paddy Murray memorial cup off to a winning start when he beat Conor Creedon by one bowl of odds at Ballygurteen. O’Callaghan opened the first bend in three where he had big odds, he raised the bowl with a huge fourth past Dullea’s new house. Creedon knocked the bowl with a big sixth, and after another nothing separated them. Creedon took his second lead of the score with a big eighth back of O’Mahony’s avenue. O’Callaghan’s bowling took a dramatic dip in form when he played three poor bowls in succession that Creedon did not take full advantage of. Back of O’Mahony’s Coffee dock O’Callaghan had almost a bowl and was expected to take this to O’Donovan’s bend in two more but it took three shots and Creedon was back in front again by fifteen meters. O’Callaghan made Granure Cross in two good bowls and again Creedon was on the back foot when he missed Burke’s entrance in two and then missed the line to give victory to O’Callaghan.

O'ROURKE TAKE HANCY HUBBARD CUP

A pre-covid tournament at Beal Na Marbh came to a conclusion between John O’Rourke, Rylane and John Young, Drinagh playing for a stake of €500 a-side. O’Rourke was in control of this score from the off. After four shots each to the top of the hill O’Rourke had sixty meters of odds. After three more to the rock O’Rourke extended his odds to eighty meters and when Young caught the rock with his eight he suddenly found himself a bowl of odds down. Young clawed the odds back to forty meters at the start of the straight. At the Novice D line O’Rourke had almost a bowl of odds again. At the end of the straight O’Rourke raised the bowl of odds and held this out sight at the last bend and on for the finish to claim the Hancy Hubbard memorial cup.

There was a busy days bowling at Lyre on Sunday last, where several high quality contests took place. In a junior B tournament score Ger O’Driscoll, Newcestown, beat Ger Connolly, Shannonvale by one bowl of odds for a stake of €2,200 a-side. O’Driscoll opened with two good bowls just back of the forest entrance he raised the bowl with a good third. Two more each back of the tunnel where it was just under the bowl. O’Driscoll raised the bowl again with his fifth as Connolly’s bowl veered off right. At Crowley’s bend in eight and nine shots each O’Driscoll had a valuable twenty five meters of odds. Connolly got a super bowl at the crossover peeping sight for McCarthy’s bend and O’Driscoll got caught well back at Crowley’s concrete entrance and only beat the tip again by thirty meters. This was a big opportunity for Connolly to level things up but he got caught right and just beat O’Driscoll’s tip. Both went sight for McCarthy’s, Connolly keeping it under the bowl. However O’Driscoll raised the bowl again at the big tree. Connolly lined an incredible fourteenth that O’Driscoll missed by fifty meters, but O’Driscoll recovered well with his next and when Connolly missed the finish line O’Driscoll went on to win by a bowl of odds. In supporting scores at Lyre Sean O’Neill beat Tim Allen by one bowl for €400 a-side, Seamus Hayes beat Kevin Walsh last shot for €400 a-side, Anthony Gould & Maurice Connolly beat Jim Coffey & Eoin McCarthy by two bowls for €2,200 a-side, Eoin McCarthy beat Jim Coffey last shot €1,000 a-side, Johnny O’Driscoll & Tom Connolly beat Jim Coffey & Thomas Maloney two bowls €1,200 a-side.

JUNIOR A GRADING GENERATES DEBATE CONSENSUS THAT STRONG BAND OF JUNIORS SHOULD BE NURTURED TOGETHER

At the executive meeting of Bol Chumann on Wednesday October 1st, the main topic of discussion was the grading, mainly for our Junior A players, it was felt that there is a nice cohort of juniors coming through and that they should be nurtured together. These players are all of the age bracket between (18-25) they are players who will be playing each other for the next twenty plus years, suggestions made that they would be put in a Junior A premier grade and may be joined by some of the lower Intermediate players. With grading of Senior and Intermediates due to take place next executive meeting on November 5th, the Junior A will also be done on this night.
