O' DRISCOLL GETS BETTER OF O'SULLIVAN IN FINAL
Lyre hosted two finals a pre-covid junior B final and a novice D. The junior B was contested between Johnny O’Driscoll, Clonakilty and Micháel O’Sullivan, Rosscarbery, playing for a stake of €620 a-side. After three each past the forest entrance O’Driscoll had thirty meters of odds. O’Sullivan’s form dipped from here so much so that O’Driscoll had two bowls of odds at the tunnel, O’Driscoll held this odds to Crowley’s bend, O’Sullivan was only poor sight at the crossover but unleashed a huge bowl to sight at McCarthy’s bend, O’Driscoll followed this but the two bowls was down. O’Driscoll another big bowl to the big tree that O’Sullivan missed and conceded.
In the Novice D final at Lyre Damien Daly from Caheragh was victorious over Shane Healy, Newcestown playing for €1,350 a-side. Nothing separated them in four each to the Mason’s steps. A blunder from Healy with his fifth when he got caught right on top of the hill and Daly went full sight at the bottom. Healy kept it under the bowl in two more to O’Donovan’s pillars. Two more big bowls from Daly to the School where he had almost two bowls. It was an even two bowls at the nook. Healy knocked the two bowls briefly with a good bowl to the hump but Daly restored them again with a super tenth back of Ballinascarthy cross where matters were terminated.
The first score of the new Mother Hegarty Senior tournament at Lyre featured Brian Wilmot against Wayne Parkes, playing for a stake of €1,250 a-side. Wilmot opened with a big first shot that Parkes only beat by thirty meters in two, a massive third shot from Parkes won him his first lead. Over the tunnel in two more is good bowling for the road Wilmot was back in front. Parkes got an incredible sixth shot and he was back in front by fifteen meters at Crowley entrance. Wilmot came into a huge bowl here and went up sight at Crowley’s bend with his next. Parkes incredibly missed up sight at Crowley’s bend and suddenly he was on the back foot, up at McCarthy’s bend Wilmot had fifty meters of an advantage, he held this odds in two more and got a huge eleventh shot that raised the bowl, and moves on to the next round.
40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS AT BALLINCURRIG
As Ballincurrig prepare for a long weekend of bowling, celebrating their 40th anniversary of the King & Queen of the Roads, two scores were played over the newly resurfaced road. Anthony Crowley from the City playing Cillian Kelleher from Kilnamartyra for a stake of €1,500 a-side. Both players found the conditions tough on the newly re-surfaced road, bowls played well were getting slashed off. Crowley led this one from start to finish, Kelleher just short of the no-play line in six and Crowley beat it. After two more from Crowley at the start of the long straight he had a bowl of odds. He held this odds to the big corner, up the short straight and on for the serpent, Kelleher could make no inroads on Crowley’s lead and Crowley won out in the end by a bowl.
TOM O'DONOVAN TAKES SECTION C FINAL
The Mid-North-Gaeltacht vintage B final was played at Beal Na Blath between Tom O’Donovan and Batty Foley, no stake in this one. Foley took an early lead in this score but at the Bulls Gate O’Donovan was in front by forty meters, he held this odds to Dan Joe’s lane and on through Bradfield’s Cross. He increased his odds to almost a bowl at Murphy’s palms and held this to the finish.
AN ALL TOGHER WEST CORK FINAL
The West Cork region progressed on with their Junior A tournament, two scores were played, at the Clubhouse Noel O’Regan beat Donal Riordan by the last shot for €2,200 a-side and in Bantry Liam Hurley beat Denis O’Driscoll by the last shot for €800 a-side, they also completed their Junior ladies championship where Niamh O’Connell beat her sister Emer at the Clubhouse.
