TIGHT FINISHES AND BIG WINS ACROSS NOVICE AND JUNIOR GRADES
Lyre hosted a novice D quarter final between Caheragh’s Cathal O’Sullivan and Innishannon jockey John Hayes Holland playing for a stake of €1,150 a-side. O’Sullivan out the first bend in three bowls where it was just under the bowl. After three more down the hill to O’Donovan’s pillars O’Sullivan had almost a bowl of odds all to one meter. Holland got a massive ninth covered the straight to the School, this knocked the bowl by fifty meters but this was as good as it got for Holland as O’Sullivan raised the bowl again at the Creamery and was back of Ballinascarthy cross in two more where his winning margin was two bowls.
At Ballinacurra in a Junior C semi-final score Cathal Creedon, Baile Bhuirne won by the jaws of death from Conor Lucey Beal Na Marbh, no stake in this one. Creedon opened with three huge bowls through Brinny Cross where he had a bowl of odds. Three more to the avenue where he still had a bowl of odds. A dip in form from here for Creedon and at the Hurling Alley his odds was down to sixty meters. Lucey lined two huge bowls his ninth and tenth to the Silvery gates that gave him his first lead, heading on for the home straight, but a poor twelvth that could have sealed the score for him went right and now he was only five meters fore bowl. Creedon got a huge last bowl that Lucey missed.
In the second junior C semi-final played at Curraheen Eoin O’Donovan, Belgooly and Michael Ahern Conna had a ding dong battle, playing for a stake of €850 a-side, with O’Donovan a hot favourite. At Ballinora cross in three each O’Donovan had four meters of odds. After two more to Ryan’s corner O’Donovan was just fore bowl. Ahern got a great run off the bridge with his eight and raised a substantial lead facing up the tough rising road he held this lead in ten shots to the riding school. O’Donovan played two great bowls to the avenue that knocked the odds to twenty five meters. And followed with another to Richards’s lane that won him back the lead by three meters. However Ahern was back in front for the last shot, O’Donovan got a massive bowl through Jimmy’s Cross and Ahern missed this.
At Inch in a Novice C semi-final score Liam Kearney, Inchageelagh was a pillar to post winner over Barry Coughlan, Templemartin playing for €3,740 a-side. Kearney made the bridge in three huge bowls, Coughlan was at Arnopps Motor’s entrance in four keeping it under the bowl. Kearney raised the bowl with a massive fourth but Coughlan knocked it with a huge sixth to the Race Track. Kearney restored his bowl advantage with a huge sixth. But two poor bowls in succession from Kearney and a good eighth and ninth from Coughlan where he had the odds down to twenty five meters. Kearney settled again with a big tenth shot up the right track that raised the bowl again for him, he finished with two more good bowls to raise almost two bowls.
The other Novice C semi-final was played at Baile Bhurine between Eoin Hurley, Kilronan and Billy Healy, Kanturk, playing for a stake of €2,700 a-side. A sluggish start from both but they settled. Both made Roche’s avenue in two where Hurley was fore bowl by ten meters. Two more each to the start of the Long Wall Hurley still fore by twenty meters. Healy lined some long bowls and Hurley followed them but at the Island Healy was back in front by thirty five meters, three poor bowls in sucession from here put Hurley in trouble as he was suddenly a bowl in arrears. Hurley lined two great bowls to the Council yard that knocked the bowl. Healy’s twelfth fell left but he had big odds for the last shot, Hurley put down a screamer beat the finish line well, Healy had to do everything right and this he did and beat the tip by three meters.
In a novice B semi-final played at Templemartin between Michael A.Cronin Togher and T.J. Homan from Blarney playing for a stake of €2,740 a-side. In a score that Cronin looked out of, he dug deep to take a last shot victory. Homan was out Slynes bend in five good bowls where he was throwing his odds over twenty meters, he raised the bowl of odds with his sixth. From here up the rising road to O’Riordans and on for the School cross Cronin threw some incredible bowls, Homan’s speed was keeping him in front as he got some big rubs. Cronin had it down to five meters at the layby but Homan had twelve meters for the last shots, Cronin got an incredible last his thirteenth down the left track past the finish and out sight at the Stonefield bend, Homan gave his no chance in left, giving Cronin his only lead and a sweet victory.
The second novice B semi-final played at Clondrohid, this was only a five shot victory for Minihane as Murphy pulled up injured at the Black House. Two each to the Mulch Yard where Minihane had thirty meters of odds. Murphy got a nice rub past O’Riordan’s small gate to take his first lead, but Minihane was back in front again by ten meters after a perfect fourth up through Tier Beg Cross past the Avenue gate. Murphy missed sight at the Black House and it was here that he hurt himself and Minihane out full sight to take victory.
KELLEHER CLINCHES JUNIOR B SILVERWARE
In the midst of all the championship semi-finals, Templemartin hosted a tournament final between Cillian Kelleher, David Hegarty and Kenneth Murphy playing for a three-way stake of €1,000 a-side. After two each to Desmond’s pillars Hegarty had five meters on Kelleher and twenty on Murphy. Murphy got a good third, Kelleher a huge third to the New House and Hegarty missed this by twenty meters. Both Murphy and Hegarty missed sight at Slynes corner with their fourth and Kelleher went full sight. Murphy began to fall behind in this score from here to O’Riordan’s and Hegarty was fighting hard to starve off the bowl of odds. At Collins Wall Kelleher had almost a bowl on Murphy and was throwing his odds over forty five meters on Hegarty. Hegarty lined a great ninth that Kelleher only beat by twelve meters, both Kelleher and Hegarty had a bowl on Murphy. Hegarty took a bad option of roadshowing for his next shot and it veered in right, Kelleher punished him here with a massive bowl to the School Cross that Hegarty only beat by ten meters. Murphy fell behind by two bowls here. Kelleher raised the bowl on Hegarty below the School Cross. Hegarty got a glimmer of hope when he went full sight at the Stonefield bend but Kelleher followed this and beat the tip by one foot. Murphy was three bowls out of the score at this juncture. Hegarty got a good bowl to Buttimer’s but not enough as Kelleher followed and beat this to take the honour.
The Queen Qualifiers tournament for the Gretta Cormican Cup continued this past week in a very exciting score at Newcestown. Ciara Buckley, Ballyclough playing Maria Nagle, Rosscarbery. No stake in this one, Buckley started well, she was to the lollipops in three good bowls, almost a bowl of odds up, she held this in two more to O’Brien’s Cross. Nagle rallied well to knock the odds to twenty five meters at Keanes Farm. Nagle upped her game considerably from here with two very well played bowls to Canty’s lane, Buckley was just keeping her nose in front here. Nagle squandered her thirteenth very right and Buckley responded with a huge bowl up the middle, it looked that it might raise the bowl of odds but Nagle got another super bowl keeping it well under the bowl. A poor fourteenth from Buckley and now the odds was only twelve meters with two shot to go. Nagle made a gallant effort for the line but it just fell short, but was enough to give her only her second lead and victory.
